“Useless is the Horse for Safety, It’s Great Strength No Sure Escape”

Perhaps a word is in order about the title of this blog. Some people, but not my daughter, recognize the words as the tag line of an obscene suggestion that can be made to someone who has reached beyond the outer limits of tolerance. There are those days and moments in my life. Better though, is the idea that everyone is riding some sort of ‘horse’. Call it an ‘agenda’, call it an ‘attitude’ or a ‘values system’: most people have a belief system that supports and sustains them in life, and even carries them through the darker times. Students in my class struggled as they were asked to explain what they truly believed in this morning as a writing prompt. I fear that some of their ‘horses’ don’t provide enough strength to escape; I am terrified that some of them are afoot. Some of them feel the same way.
