Selling Your Soul One Sound Bite at a Time

It’s that time of ‘silly season’ when the election is rapidly approaching and candidates want to win so badly they can justify any statement, any method, any means to gain the end prize. In this country the presidential election is the most desperate because the prize is the biggest. What is different this time is the naked admittance that one candidate is ‘going negative’ because ‘it’s the only way to win’. Taking some truths out of context, using half-truths, or better yet, telling journalists ‘we have to make them (the voters) afraid of him (the opponent) so we can win”; all in the name of victory. If absolute power corrupts absolutely then evidently the mere prospect of power can make good and decent people say or do anything to convince themselves and others it is vital that they have it. I am saddened by the thought of compromising one’s character in order to win anything; to borrow a quote “for what doth it profit a man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his own soul?” I am dismayed to see a good man selling his soul in a series of 30 second sound bites but I am devastated by the thought that is done because “negative campaigning works.” What does that say about the state of our souls?
