I read a great deal, some would say ‘too much’. When I was in elementary school my father thought I should ‘see someone’ because it ‘wasn’t normal’ for a boy to read so much. I didn’t see someone for this abnormality and my father learned to accept it although he never understood it. He even tried to support me by buying boxes of books at auctions. The fact that one of those boxes was completely filled with pornographical novels was a joke between us the rest of his life.
As a result of all of this reading, one of my favorite phrases is “I read somewhere that….” which is a source of amusement and annoyance to many people. Well, I read somewhere that there are a couple of things someone should take into consideration before writing. The first is the question “What do I have to say that I simply MUST say?” The second question is “What do I have to say that you simply MUST hear?”
If both of these questions were applied to almost all forms of writing which need would be predominant, the need to express, or the need to communicate something important? I don’t know the answer to that question but I suspect we are more successful at the first than the second.
